This activity spans over 50 years. From the very beginning of his scientific career in 1956, he was involved in the development of the Geobotanical Map of Romania, published in 1960 and 1961, and continued until after his retirement, in 2008, when the Map of Forests in Romania, by ecosystem units, was published. Throughout his career, he has developed 15 maps with geobotanical, phytocenological, ecosystemic, arealistic content, etc. Between 1979 – 2000, he collaborated on the ambitious project aimed at creating the Natural Vegetation Map of Europe, which was completed with the publication of the map in 2000. In this project, he also co-authored the description of two major vegetation units of Europe: G – Thermophilic Oak Forests and L – Silvosteppes. Between 1980-1990, he coordinated a team of phytocenologists from various research institutes to create the vegetation map of Romania, as a component part of the Natural Vegetation Map of Europe. The results of these research were published in the work “Vegetation of Romania,” published in 1992.

Typological classification of forests and phytocenology. Closely related to the vegetation mapping activity are the research efforts concerning the zoning and regionalization of vegetation and the typological classification of forests. The first researches carried out by Nicolae Donita on the vegetation areas and floors in Romania were published in 1963, and the classification system proposed at that time was later adopted by other authors in numerous works, including in the classification of forestry stations and in forest management activities. Based on this classification scheme, the vegetation of Romania was described in the volume “Biogeography of Romania” (1969). He continued his research in this direction, coordinating a broad multidisciplinary team to carry out the zoning and regionalization of forests, a work completed and published in 1980. This fundamental work laid the foundation for the organization of the network of seed reserves and transfer of afforestation material in Romania, and for the delimitation of ecological regions in Romania, etc. In the decade from 1980-1990, he coordinated a large team of specialists from several institutions (ICAS, Transilvania University of Braşov, Institute of Biology of the Romanian Academy, ICPA), within a project aimed at the typological classification of forests, based on ecosystem principles. A total of 152 types of forest ecosystems were detailed (Types of Forest Ecosystems in Romania, 1990). Subsequently, based on this research, the geospatial database of forests and the Digital Map of Romania’s Forests (by ecosystem units) were developed, a major achievement of forestry scientific research in the last decade. Through the processing and analysis of the geospatial database, a series of derivative products requested by various beneficiaries (central public authorities responsible for forests, nature conservation, environmental protection, forest managers, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, etc.) were obtained. Among the most important products derived from the geospatial database of Romania’s forests, we mention the database and distribution maps of tree species that build forest ecosystems, the database and distribution maps of forest formations, distribution maps of forest habitat types, forest distribution by altitude categories, by terrain slope categories, by categories of land exposure, the geospatial database of forests from the national network of protected areas, the geospatial database of forests from the pan-European network NATURA 2000, the database of forests of social interest around urban localities, the database for substantiating Romania’s ecological network, etc.
These products are extremely useful tools for specialists in the forestry sector, as well as for those in related fields of activity (spatial planning, protected areas, biodiversity conservation and management, environmental protection, wildlife management of hunting interest, etc.), bringing a significant contribution to increasing performance and competitiveness in these fields of activity.

Citește mai multÎnchide

Professor of Forestry, Forest Ecology and Phytosociology at the Ecological University, Bucharest, Romania (1990-2003)

Professor in Forestry, Forest Ecology, Phytosociology and Dendrology at the University of Oradea, Romania (1995-2007)

Professor in Forestry, Forest Ecology, Phytosociology and Dendrology at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Banat, Timisoara, Romania (2003-2009)

Senior scientific researcher within the Forest Ecology Laboratory of the Forest Research and Management Institute, Bucharest (1955-1997) Main activities and responsibilities Vegetation mapping.
